Industry Award Celebrates Major Achievements of Women in Construction

The construction industry has traditionally been a male-dominated workplace, and latest statistics show that things are not changing in a significant way, with women making up only 10% of the nation’s construction workforce in 2018.  Figures from the state of New York reported a tiny increase in the female workforce of 3% between 2007 and 2017.

But one woman in construction is bucking that trend, with her efforts due to be recognized at a prestigious awards ceremony next February.  Debbie Danto is Chief Operating Officer at Fort Lauderdale-based Danto Builders and is being honored with a special award at the Black Dresses and Blueprints: Celebrating Women in Construction awards that are being held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale, on Wednesday 6 February 2020.

A great honor for women in construction

The ceremony is organized by Rebuilding Together Broward County, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving housing stock for low-income households.  The Celebrating Women in Construction awards are designed to celebrate the role and impact of women in the construction industry, with Debbie Danto receiving her award alongside notable figures such as Beth Azor of Azor Advisory Services and Traci Miller of Miller Construction.

“It is a great honor to be receiving this award, particularly as it is in recognition of daily life virtues such as integrity, dignity and community service,” says Debbie Danto.  “These are values that I try to live each and every day, and they are something I have worked hard to embed in Danto Builders.

“As an industry that continues to under serve women in the workplace, it is a very special moment for me to be recognized alongside other really great women in construction – especially Traci Miller, who I have enormous respect for.  Together I hope we can play a part in creating more opportunities for women in construction”.

Creating openings for women in construction

While issues persist with increasing the number of women in the construction industry, there are moves underway to address them.  One consequence of a male-dominated industry is the lack of suitable personal protective equipment, particularly for working at heights.  Fortunately a new program looks set to supply safety harnesses that properly fit women working in construction, with the hope that this will be a step towards ensuring a more diverse workforce.

Elsewhere, the construction firm Skanska has redesigned its safety vests to provide a better fit and protection for its female workforce.  Senior leaders at the company have previously expressed frustration at having to supply female workers with equipment designed for men, including gloves with overly long fingers and wide palms.

Through industry recognition for such senior women in construction, and with the growing awareness of the changes needed to boost gender diversity in the industry, it is hoped that the slow increase in female employment in construction begins to gather pace.
