Students at Marion Mix Elementary School get hands-on experience constructing and programming robots in the school’s robotics club. The club provides a fun opportunity for students to learn new concepts as well as encourages students to learn more about STEM subjects. The club focuses on exploring the engineering process and using creativity in science.

In the robotics club, students use LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robots to make different creations. Students are also taught how to program their robots to do different tasks or serve unique purposes. There is a focus on promoting divergent thinking and teamwork while adhering to rigorous science and engineering practices. Any student in fourth through sixth grade can join the club, which meets every Thursday after school from 3:00-4:30 pm.

Besides exploring science and engineering, students who attend the robotics club have the opportunity to compete in yearly competitions. The first competition students compete in is First LEGO League. First Lego League hosts multiple competitions based around their core values: discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun. This fall at the competition, Marion Mix Elementary was given the Judges Award for exemplifying the FLL Core Values.

The second competition that robotics club students get the opportunity to compete in is C.R.E.S.T Summit. C.R.E.S.T stands for Capitol Region Engineering Science and Technology, and the program encourages students to learn about and participate in STEM subjects. The Elk Grove Unified School District has been able to host the competition in past years, and the Marion Mix Elementary School Robotics Club has won first place in the competition for the last three years.
