Fisher Island Miami: The Wealthiest Zip Code in the United States

Miami, FL – One of the most affluent communities in the world and home to the highest per capita income in the United States is called Fisher Island. According to Bloomberg, the population had an average annual salary of $2.2 million in 2019. The small island, home to just 650 families and spanning 216 acres, is located in Miami Beach and is separated from South Beach by a canal. There are only a few buildings and luxury houses, where millionaires and celebrities live or own their vacation homes. The only way to get there is by boat or helicopter. Cars are not allowed on the island, and residents can move around with golf carts, the primary mode of transportation in the community.

Despite being a small reserved residential place, owners and visitors do not need to leave the community. Fisher Island is like a mini-city that offers an excellent school, health clinics, banks, supermarkets, and many entertainment features. Some of them are an observatory, a world-class spa, a lush golf course, an aviary with a dozen species of birds, and a fabulous private beach with white sand imported from the Bahamas.

Since the island offers an exclusive, private, and safe environment, it is the perfect hide-out for celebrities. “At the island, celebrities will be far from the paparazzi and fans asking for autographs,” said Heloisa Arazi, broker and owner of AMG International Realty, specializing in Fisher Island Real Estate. Some celebrities who have owned homes on this 216-acre Florida enclave are Oprah Winfrey, Mel Brooks, and the tennis star Boris Becker.

Fisher Island’s history is quite interesting. Originally Fisher Island was not an island. The place was a piece of land at the southern tip of the peninsula of Miami Beach. It was separated from the mainland by a canal built to reach the port of Miami. Its first owner was Carl Fisher, a well-known businessman, and millionaire who was part of Miami’s history and development. Carl Fisher later sold the island to William Kissam Vanderbilt in a famous negotiation, where Carl supposedly traded the island for William’s mega-yacht: “My island for your Yacht.”

The island then changed ownership several times. Only in the 1980s, the community was exploited by the Real Estate industry, transforming it into an urban luxury neighborhood.

The Vanderbilt mansion is now a 5-star luxury hotel and is part of the Fisher Island Club.
