Dr. Andrea L’Afflitto selected Top Associate Professor of the Year by IATOP

Dr. Andrea L’Afflitto, Associate Professor at Virginia Tech, was recently selected as Top Associate Professor of the Year 2024 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to research and the industry. 

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself; only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities. All Honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.

With decades of professional experience, ​​Dr. Andrea L’Afflitto has certainly proven himself an expert in his field.  He currently holds the position of associate professor within the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. Additionally, he maintains an affiliation with the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. L’Afflitto’s possesses specialized knowledge in the fields of nonlinear robust control, optimal control, and path and trajectory planning. His research has received financial support from various organizations such as A.R.L., DARPA, NAWC-AD, NOAA, N.S.F., and O.N.R. The focus of their research is on developing efficient path and trajectory planners, as well as robust adaptive controllers, for autonomous ground and aerial vehicles. These developments aim to address challenges posed by safety in unknown environmental conditions, as well as uncertainties in modeling. Dr. L’Afflitto serves as the head of the Advanced Control Systems Lab (A.C.S.L.), a research facility that focuses on the development, execution, and evaluation of sophisticated guidance and control systems for compact autonomous ground and aerial vehicles, which serve as testbeds for the state-of-the-art algorithms developed by himself and his students.

From 2015 until 2019, Dr. L’Afflitto worked as an assistant professor in the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma before joining the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. Dr. Since 2017, Dr. L’Afflitto has been serving as a summer faculty fellow at several national research laboratories, including ARL, NAVAIR, and AFRL. Previously, Dr. L’Afflitto worked at the German Aerospace Agency and served as a systems and operations engineer for a payload installed aboard the International Space Station.  

Before embarking on his professional career, Dr. L’Afflitto obtained his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Napoli’ Federico II’, September 2004, M.S. Aerospace Engineering, University of Napoli’ Federico II’, September 2006, M.S. Mathematics, Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech, May 2011, and Ph.D. Aerospace Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, April 2015.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Andrea L’Afflitto has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his accomplishments. He is the Recipient of the DARPA Young Faculty Award 2018, the Domenica Rea D’Onofrio Scholarship 2011-2015, the Wolfe Fellowship 2012, Pratt Fellowship 2009, and the Top 5% reviewer for I.E.T. Control Theory and Applications 2016. This year, he will be featured in T.I.P. (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. He will be honored at I.A.O.T.P.’s annual awards gala at the N.Y.C. Plaza Hotel this December for his selection as Top Associate Professor of the Year.

Aside from his successful career, Dr. L’Afflitto is a published author and active in his community.  He is engaged in internships at esteemed organizations such as Fermilab, the Italian Space Agency, and Thales Alenia Space. Dr. L’Afflitto’s extensive publishing record includes a monograph, two book chapters, and over forty articles that have undergone rigorous peer review in esteemed journals and conferences.
