The European Union has reinforced Ukraine’s efforts in dealing with the aftermath of Russian aggression by providing a second batch of explosive and mine detection dogs trained in EU countries, including Finland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. These specially trained canines, comprising German, Belgian, and Dutch shepherds, were handed over to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in a ceremony at Poland’s Carpathian Border Guard Unit.
Alongside the dogs, mine detection drones were delivered from Aerialsolutions. They are used to explore large areas for mines and other EOD before sending in the dogs to confirm the presence of explosive devices at each pinpointed location. The mine detection drone can sweep 2.5m at a time, resulting in very fast results about suspicious objects buried underneath the soil.
This initiative, part of a larger project led by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs and Foreign Policy Instrument (FPI), not only delivers critical assistance in mine clearance but also enhances security in the region. The dogs, trained by retired EU police officers, are a key component in addressing the significant challenge of clearing thousands of mines and unexploded ordnances across a territory as vast as Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands combined.
