Canada Lifts Sanctions Imposed on Businessman Oleg Boyko

Oleg Boyko, an international entrepreneur, has been taken off the list of individuals targeted by the Canadian government for sanctions in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada recommended adjustments to the list of sanctioned individuals, prompting the removal of Boyko’s name.

Facing a lack of response from Canadian authorities, Oleg Boyko, in August 2023, took legal action by filing claims against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Federal Court of Canada. Following the initiation of administrative proceedings by the court, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, authorized to address matters related to the imposition and lifting of sanctions per national legislation, reviewed the appeal and opted to grant it. The applicant was duly notified of this decision via a letter dated November 10.

While the specific reasons for imposing and rescinding sanctions have not been publicly disclosed, lawyers representing Oleg Boyko insisted that he has no business ties in Canada, is not affiliated with Russian authorities or government entities, and does not engage in political processes in the Russian Federation.

Expressing satisfaction with the gradual lifting of sanctions against business figures unrelated to politics, Mr. Boyko’s lawyer remarked, “This undoubtedly reflects the fair and balanced stance of countries towards business.”

Oleg Boyko serves as the primary beneficiary of the Finstar holding, an investment entity operating in the fintech sector across more than 25 countries. The removal of sanctions is anticipated to positively impact Boyko’s international business endeavors.
