International Housing Concepts, Inc. Works With Community Partners to Build A Tiny Home to Be Donated to a Family in Gates, Oregon Who Lost Everything in the Recent Wildfires
SALEM, OREGON – International Housing Concepts (IHC) is collaborating with Tiny Mountain Houses to construct a fully furnished, Park Model tiny home to be donated to the Smith family of Gates, Oregon, who lost everything in the recent devastating wildfires that affected their area.
The home – which will be custom-built to fit the family of four’s needs – will be donated via the Mid-Willamette Valley United Way in Salem, Oregon. In consultation with the Santiam Integration Team (SIT), the Smith family was chosen in a contest to be one of those families in greatest need of a home replacement. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, along with their two young children, ages eight and five, have been living in a leaking trailer situated on their property, where their home used to be. Jordan Truitt, who sits on the board of directors of the local United Way, expounded on the family’s dire living situation by saying, “There isn’t sufficient water storage to shower. The only appliance they have for cooking is a microwave, and the heavy rains have exacerbated the leaks inside the camper.”
Tim Smith, along with the rest of his family, came to IHC’s warehouse on Monday, January 18, 2021, to tour the facility and to experience a Park Model tiny house first-hand. “We are shocked and overwhelmed with emotion,” Smith said. “We have been reluctant to seek help, as we know there are others who have it worse than us… we are thankful beyond words for this amazing gift.”
Recent projections indicate that the home, which will be delivered to the Smith’s scorched land in Gates, should be completed within six to seven weeks. In the meantime, with the help of local partners, the Smiths will be set up in a local hotel, free of charge, until their new home is completed, delivered and furnished.
International Housing Concepts, which have also donated thousands of space heaters and other materials to their local wildfire relief effort, are also providing designs and plans for a United Way-run prototype community built on surplus land in Salem, designed to offer disaster relief and other regional housing needs across the nation.
