New Memoir Provides Deep Personal Insight into the Immigrant Experience

“If You Didn’t Know, Now You Know”

Every so often, a reader comes across a book that makes such an indelible impression that it must be shared with others. Cascadura: An Immigrant’s Tale is exactly that kind of book. Like a paintbrush in the hands of a gifted artist, the author creates vivid images on paper with words, much like an artist applying paint to canvas in the process of creating a masterpiece. This beautifully written memoir provides the reader with great insight into the complexity of leaving a familiar country and venturing into the otherwise unknown. It is a captivating story with which many will identify, even if they have never embarked on such a perilous journey.

Cascadura: An Immigrant’s Tale is a brilliantly written memoir that takes the readers back and forth between the bountiful, sunbathed islands of Trinidad and Tobago and Winnipeg, the coldest Canadian city. Through the author’s imagery and captivating writing style, the reader is taken on a journey along with the author and experiences all that he encounters. The writing is lyrical, weaving history, politics, poetry, and contemporary social issues into one captivating memoir. This book will move you to tears and then lift you up with laughter. Mr. De Gale is a seductive writer with great charm and powerful descriptive ability.

He writes:

“Like a colossus standing tall in the distance, the mountain that shields the island from hurricane winds struck an arresting pose. Jungle green and thickly forested, it rises in excess of 3000 feet at its highest point, amplifying the beauty of this magnificent isle, where meandering roads and tranquil rivers cut deep into the belly of the island so warm, so fertile, so green.”

Whether written in Standard English or Trinidad vernacular, the dialogue is spicy and as rhythmic as the steel pan and calypso music that is the hallmark of the island.

In telling the story of sharing a bunk bed with a friend who was rumored to be sexually ambiguous, he wrote:

“Charles had a habit of smoking cigarettes in bed when everyone was asleep and it was rumoured that he buttered his bread on both sides with no particular preference for one side or the other.”

The book is available on various online bookstores, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Redshelf.
