ASEAN diplomats in China experience Chinese culture at the “Elegant Spring Gathering”
On the eve of the International Chinese Language Day, on April 15, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), together with the ASEAN-China Center, organized an event for diplomats from ASEAN countries in China with the theme of “Millennial Rites of Spring: Celebrating Art, Beauty, and Life”. Hu Zhiping, Deputy Director-General of the CLEC, and Shi Zhongjun, Secretary General of the ASEAN-China Center, attended and addressed. More than 20 diplomats from seven ASEAN embassies in China, including Myanmar Ambassador U Tin Maung Swe and Indonesian Ambassador’s wife Sih Elsiwi Handayani Oratmangun, gathered at the ASEAN-China Center to experience Chinese culture.
Hu said that the United Nations has designated April 20 as “Chinese Language Day” and the CLEC will hold a series of celebrating activities for the International Chinese Language Day globally. The CLEC is ready to work hand in hand with friends from ASEAN countries to provide quality services for people in ASEAN countries to learn Chinese, to further promote language exchange and cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, and to better serve the economic and social development of ASEAN countries, contributing to building the China-ASEAN community with a shared future.
Shi Zhongjun noted that China and ASEAN countries are good neighbors, good partners, and good friends. The two sides shall walk hand in hand towards the shared future. As one of the official languages of the United Nations, Chinese is widely used worldwide and plays an increasingly important role in the communication and cooperation between China and ASEAN countries. It is hoped that all diplomats in China will seize their opportunities in China to learn more Chinese and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
With the melody of Gu Qin, a seven-stringed plucked instrument in some ways similar to the zither, and Xiao, a vertical bamboo flute, teachers from the Center for International Communication of Chinese Culture and the College of Intensive Chinese Training at Beijing Language and Culture University, demonstrated the “Four Arts of Life” of the ancient Chinese refined scholars, including burning incense, hanging paintings, drinking tea and arranging flowers. In a relaxed and happy atmosphere, like ancient Chinese refined scholars, diplomats experienced the pleasure and elegance of life. After the event, the diplomats said it was memorable and helped improve their understanding of Chinese culture.
