The Career Engine: The Pathway to Successfully Applying to a Competitive University

Over the years, we have reviewed many educational services, and Curriculum.com’s Career Engine is right up there with the very best for students who wish to apply to top universities. The ‘Career Engine’ is a transformative educational offering meticulously designed to turn students’ university aspirations into reality.

Career Engine was created by Ms Yasmin Sarwar and Dr Mario Peters, who established the two highest-performing schools in the UK (Cardiff Sixth Form College and Oxford International College), the Career Engine is an innovative programme dedicated to helping students aged 11 to 18 pursue their career aspirations. The schools that they founded have topped the A-level league tables since 2010, with student admissions to prestigious universities nearly double the national average. Now, with the Career Engine, Curriculum.com is offering the same quality education and guidance to a wider audience.

In today’s competitive academic world, good grades are not enough. To stand out, students must demonstrate a deep interest in their chosen subject beyond the school syllabus. The Career Engine helps its students achieve just that. By fostering intellectual curiosity and a passion for learning, the programme ensures students have an edge when applying to top-tier universities.

So, how does the Career Engine work? The programme is divided into two distinct phases: Discover and Explore. During the Discover phase, students are introduced to content related to three broad career paths, covering about 98% of university degrees. The progression speed is tailored to each student’s needs and interests. By Year 10, the goal is to have identified not only which career group a student fits into, but also the specific niches within that group they find most exciting.

Upon establishing a clear direction, students are transitioned to the Explore phase. In this phase, students delve deeper into their chosen career group, developing critical skills such as reflective blog writing about their experiences. They also prepare for competitions like the Olympiads, essay writing, and team debates. Mentors work collaboratively with students to connect wider reading materials with super-curricular activities pertinent to the students’ field of interest. This strategic approach helps cultivate the ideal student profile for their target universities.

The expert mentors that the students are assigned provide personalised guidance and support. Students meet with their mentors monthly to review their progress and plan their next steps, developing their career knowledge and interests through wider reading. Outside of these tutorial sessions, students have access to Career Engine’s Facilitated Reading Club twice per week, where they can read and discuss their books with facilitators in small groups along with one-to-one time with the facilitating mentors.

Here’s what Thomas, a 12-year-old student, had to say about his experience with the Career Engine: “I really enjoyed the articles and books that I read. My time in the Career Engine programme has helped me expand my subject interests beyond the classroom along with my vocabulary, written English, and super-curricular activities. I very much look forward to the sessions each week.”

Investing in this game-changing service may not be inexpensive, but given the team behind it, it’s hardly surprising. The service begins at £2,950. This fee includes one-to-one sessions with an expert mentor, written feedback on tasks, and bi-weekly facilitated Career Engine sessions to enhance the students’ learning experience.
